Update: BART police officer Johannes Meserhle was convicted of involuntary manslaughter. The judge will sentence him from five to fourteen years on Nov. 5. A peaceful demonstration in downtown Oakland drew 1,200 people. After dark, a mob of around 200 persons broke shop and vehicle windows, set fires, looted, and wrote graffiti like "Oakland is our amusement park tonight!" (July 8, 2010)

As a verdict nears in the trial of BART police officer Johannes Meserhle for the killing of Oscar Grant, small shop owners in downtown Oakland and the Fruitvale commercial district get ready for a possible second round of fires, vandalism, and vehicle smashing. The main business expense this week has been for plywood.


 

 

Anarchists, the very opposite of revolutionaries uniting people to topple centers of oppression, sneer at struggling restaurant owners and beauty shop operators.


 

 

A week after the New Year's Day shooting, executives who operate ineffective social programs tried to make a name for themselves by calling a march and rally. But they did not prepare for the anarchists despite obvious warning. Where is Dereca Blackmon today, the self-appointed organizer who bears heavy responsibility for the January 2009 riot?
