LA Mayor Villaraigosa Calls for 1,300 More Police

"Los Angeles has only one officer for every 400 residents, while New York City has one for every 220 residents. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa rightly wants to hire 1,300 more officers..."
Los Angeles Times, July 11, 2005.
Meanwhile, Oakland has less than one officer for every 550 residents. (Population 400,000 served by fewer then 725 officers.) If the present councilmembers ever bring Oakland up to 802 police, Oakland would have one officer for each 498 residents, and that's with no growth in population. Oakland needs a total of 1,100 officers – and leaders with a will to get them.
