Hear Roosters? Think Cockfights

Oakland police broke up a cockfight event Feb. 28, 2009 in east Oakland, arresting 69 persons. Police discovered dozens of dead and dying roosters on the premises. (Oakland Tribune, March 5, 2009)

Dead and dying after cockfight

Do you hear roosters crowing in your neighborhood? There's a good chance some of them will be used for cockfighting.

In any case, "It is unlawful for any person to keep, harbor or maintain roosters within the city limit." (Oakland city code, 6.04.320)

The event at 725 Clara Street was discovered because neighbors made a complaint about the noise.

You can report roosters to Oakland Animal Services. The agency website has a convenient reporting form.

Cockfights, illegal drug activity, chronic noise – we have it all here with one of the neighbors. A few years back they had a very big gathering to watch the cockfighting. We heard the roosters crow in the morning and had to call animal control. It's been my experience if they are involved in one illegal venture, they will be involved in another.
