Thugs Use Violence for Kicks, Not to Get Food

Last December, two thugs carjacked senator Don Perata's spiffy State Dodge Charger. Jared Adams, his partner, and his girlfriend are indicted. Adams is separately charged with firing the shot that paralyzed 10-year-old Christopher Rodriguez while he practiced piano.

Prosecutor's Analysis

Prosecutors described a two-week long crime spree during which Adams and two friends roamed the streets looking for cars they could steal for parts. "They liked hot cars, and when they saw one they carjacked it," Chief Assistant District Attorney Nancy O'Malley said.

Their motive was to steal parts to rebuild a Camaro owned by Adams' girlfriend, who accompanied him on many of his crimes. (Oakland Tribune website, Aug. 14, 2008)

Tolerating Violent Crime
